Freddie Prinze, Jr. joins the cast of 24 for Season 8

He'll play Davis Cole, a former military man who now heads the field operations unit of the revived CTU in New York. His character is apparently a Marine who's returned from duty in the Middle East, and is readjusting to civilian life. His character also has that love angle coming in; he's romantically involved with Dayna Pakkala, an analyst at the CTU who's yet to be cast.

Oh, and one more thing: he's a big admirer of Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), and aspires to follow the same career path as him.

Prinze is the latest to join the cast of the action series' eighth season. He joins John Boyd, who will play geeky-slash-hip CTU analyst Jonah Schwartz; Jennifer Westfeldt, who will play ambitious journalist Meredith Reed; Chris Diamantopoulos, as tough White House chief-of-staff Rob Weiss; and, of course, Anil Kapoor as Middle Eastern leader Arman Hashemi.

Production for the eighth 24 season has kicked off.

New Season 8 Cast Members

Jennifer Westfeldt and John Boyd have joined the cast of Fox's "24."

On the upcoming eighth season of the real-time drama, to be set in New York, "Kissing Jessica Stein" star Westfeldt will play the recurring role of Meredith Reed, an ambitious journalist with ties to Arman Hashemi (Anil Kapoor), a Middle East leader who comes to the U.S. on a peacemaking mission.

Boyd ("The Notorious Bettie Page") will be a regular on the 20th TV/Imagine series, playing CTU systems analyst Jonah Schwartz.

Westfeldt and Boyd join previously cast Kapoor and Chris Diamantopoulos as the "24" producers are filling nine major new roles for Season 8, slated to begin production today.

Westfeldt recently recurred on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" and launched a production company with "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm.

Actor Mykelti Williamson is joining Fox's "24" as a regular.

On the series' upcoming eighth season, set in New York, he will play Brian Hastings, the head of CTU New York and a man of razor-sharp intellect.

Williamson recently co-starred in the Sundance hit "Black Dynamite." His series credits include "Boomtown" and "CSI: NY."

My apologies for being MIA the past couple of weeks. It seems that after all these years of being on planet Earth, living in Louisiana & eating all the seafood one could imagine, I've developed an allergy to seafood =( Yep, while eating one of my favorite dishes, chicken & shrimp sauteed in garlic with rosemary potatoes, my lips started to each something awful, but I ignored it, thinking it was b/c the food was a little spicy & kept eating. Within a few hours, I was swollen & itchy. Over next few days, it got worse so I finally decided to go to my doctor that Monday who gave me the diagnosis!

It's taken me from then until now to completely recuperate from the symptoms caused by the allergy & those caused by the meds I was taking, but I'm back. I truly apologize if you guys had to read all this info elsewhere first, but I promise, I wasn't goofing off while on my little sabbatical! Ok, so without further ado, a ton of posts will follow!

According to my watch, it's time for the second piece of casting on 24's eighth season!

Chris Diamantopoulos -- best known as Debra Messing's gay BFF on The Starter Wife -- has been tapped to play the series regular role of Rob Weiss, the argumentative and tough new Chief of Staff to President Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones). He replaces Taylor's current C.O.S., Ethan Kanin, who snatched his job back in last Monday's finale after the prez's psycho daughter, Olivia, was taken into federal custody.

As I previously reported, Day 8's action will switch from Washington D.C. to New York City and center on an assassination plot against a visiting foreign leader (Slumdog Millionaire's Anil Kapoor, the new season's first piece of casting).

Question: That 24 finale was awesome! Do you have any scoop about Carlos Bernard's role in season 8? --Rob
Ausiello: As of now, it's non-existent. But did you see who they cast as Cherry Jones' new Chief of Staff?!

Question: Do you know if Janeane Garofalo will be back on 24 next season? I'm kind of digging Janis. --Jason
Ausiello: Sorry to disappoint, but Janis will not be making the trek to New York. "I think the secret of this show is knowing when characters have had their story," explains exec producer Howard Gordon. "And to transpose everybody [from D.C. to New York] starts feeling very coincidental. Even getting Chloe there ... you have to explain how she got from Washington to New York and what happened. You can't do that for everybody."

Question: News on Tony and the 24 finale? --Aaron
Ausiello: One of the slots in my Season Finale Scorecard is reserved just for him. Can you guess which one? Speaking of Tony, the evil douche was the topic of conversation at Tuesday's finale screening in Hollywood. Kiefer Sutherland admitted that Carlos Bernard wasn't expecting fans to hold him personally accountable for his character's actions. "Two episodes in he started getting hate mail," he said. "Then he started getting the hate phone calls. It made him a little nervous." For his part, Bernard views Tony as a victim. "I don’t perceive Tony as evil. He's gone through really traumatic events. He's a damaged individual. He's a guy who doesn't trust anybody anymore, feels abandoned and feels he has to take matters into his own hands." Exec producer Jon Cassar urges viewers to reserve judgment until after Monday's finale. "I know right now they are kind of upset that he's bad, but it all kind of becomes clear in episode 24. We really wanted [the season] to end with Tony and Jack, and that's how it's going to end." Fellow e.p. Howard Gordon was slightly less apologetic. "If people are disappointed or don't like [how Tony's arc is resolved], too bad." (Make that a lot less apologetic.)

Question: Any scoop on the 24 finale? --Kristen
Ausiello: "Renee is all over the place in these last two episodes," reveals Annie Wersching. "I got to do my favorite stunt [of the season] -- and they let me do it myself. It involves hanging off of a car and shooting and saving someone. It was really cool."

Cara reports that the bioweapon will be ready on time for an attack at Washington Center Station, so Tony instructs Jibraan to take the subway there. Meanwhile, Jack delays the med tech from giving morphine to Harbinson, the operative who was holding Jibraan's brother Hamid hostage. Jack tortures Harbinson until he screams that he doesn't know the attack location. However, he does have a number for Tony. Jack has him call Tony, but they're not on the line long enough for Chloe to run a full trace.

Chloe and Janis get into an argument about how Chloe deliberately makes Janis feel stupid. Chloe narrows the location down to the Adams Morgan district. As Jack and his team scramble in that direction, Jibraan enters the subway station. He nervously removes his earpiece and begs the token vendor for help. The bemused vendor waves him over to a transit cop, who is really one of Tony's operatives in disguise. He forces Jibraan to put the earpiece back in. Tony tells him that he's always being watched and if he tries something like that again, his brother will die.

Season Finale Questions

Found this on BuddyTV & thought it was interesting. While I don't go that much in depth about what's going on (I do analyze but NOT this much! It does raise some interesting points, though, so enjoy!

It's another one of those questions. Was I just distracted, or did this hour of 24 feel a little flat? Then again, the finale happens next week, and two hours of it at that, and before everything breaks down we need yet another breather. Thing is, this breather felt somewhat ill-timed... but that's not exactly the point of the whole thing, isn't it? Let the questions begin.

So, in the past hour, Jack gets Tony and narrowly averts the biological attack on a subway station in Washington, D.C, and Olivia thinks she's gotten away with having Hodges killed, but Agent Pierce thinks otherwise. Oh, and Kim's in trouble again.

So, Olivia's facing a Richard Nixon-like issue. I was literally shaking my head in surprise when Agent Pierce decided to call up Ethan, the former chief of staff, and ask about something that could incriminate Olivia in the explosion that killed Hodges. Alas, it's a thing that records all phone calls and conversations. Suddenly it turned into a little funny moment.

But Olivia's become more irrational, unlike her mother, who still managed to keep herself in check after all this. You can't keep up with this any longer, ma'am. Would she end up unwittingly taking down her mother as well? I don't have any clues, but President Taylor wasn't around in this episode. Maybe she's getting some sleep. She'll wake up to something pretty big.

And, the "other play" involves Kim. I was honestly thinking we'd see Jack's eternally-endangered daughter abducted while in transit. I was thinking, meh, that'd be pretty predictable, especially considering the fact that we've been slightly spoiled about this possibility. Thus, it was a nice touch to see that an FBI agent was turned into an instant red herring, making Kim paranoid about the guy staring at her, when it's actually Jack's way of checking on her before she leaves the city. Freaky father, you.

Which makes the actual situation similarly predictable--the persons she came to, to seek solace from that FBI agent, are the persons who are actually out to get her. Where else do you find a guy who puts an open laptop on the seat beside him?

What's more significant, perhaps, is that the "big machine" is targeting Jack for the events of (technically) the past day, when he got rid of most of the pathogen and exposed himself to it in the process. The set-up was a little confusing, really. First, they want to take Tony out because he "knows too much," and now, they want Jack to defy the fully-guarded convoy he himself asked for and break him out?

Once that's out of the way--it's a stupid question, I admit--this could set up another Jack-Tony encounter. I have a feeling Tony's got no idea about the second plan. I don't think he wants Kim involved in this in any way, either, the same way he's a little too apologetic to Jack when he revealed his true intentions. Could the finale see the two work together yet again, perhaps in an effort to save Kim? There's a lot going on for this, but we've got two hours to play with.

So, in the end, it's still all about Jack. And that's how we'll end this season of 24. I don't know how exactly this will come full circle, but it makes for a pretty refreshing change, Jack having to go against himself (or so I see it) rather than some huge threat, or some big enemy. And, at least, it isn't going to be very frantic and very ruthless.

I won't float anything about how this season will end, though. Would they redeem Tony by, uhh, helping Jack with Kim's imminent rescue? Will he really die afterwards? What will this be all about? The stem cell treatment? Oh, I'm guessing after this he'll have that stem cell treatment, and he'll be very well. How convenient. Not that I want Jack to die, but it feels a little forced. But at least we'll have twenty-four more hours to watch. And that makes it full circle, unless I'm off with my predictions again.

Watching Janis and Chloe take each other down is amusing, though. Too bad we didn't see much of it this season.

Ausiello: Can't help you with the finale. Can help you with Monday's penultimate ep, which finds Jack Bauer going all Jack Bauer on Tony. It's a brutal scene, so if extreme violence isn't your thing, run for cover right around the halfway point. Just make sure you come back in time to catch Chloe and Janis' hilarious sneer-off.

Q: Is Kim Bauer following her dad to New York next season?
A: The show is looking for a 6-year-old actress to play Kim's now-4-year-old kid for an arc. Shooting gets underway later this month, assuming Kiefer Sutherland's recent headbutt heard 'round the world doesn't screw everything up.

Kayla Hashemi, Middle Eastern, 20s. Kayla is the humble and shy daughter of the President of a Middle Eastern country. She is close with her mother and wants to do anything she can to gain her mother's approval. Kayla is somewhat old-fashioned and traditional. She is also very defensive of her father and gets upset whenever anyone begins to critize him.

Sondra Hashemi, Middle Eastern, 40s - 50s. Sondra is the pretty and loyal wife of President Hashemi. At first she does not seem to be happy with her husband, but we eventually see that there is a very real bond and respect between them under the surface.

Jonah Schwartz, any ethnicity, 20s. Jonah is a quirky and brilliant Systems Analyst at the government's Counter Terrorism Unit. He looks more like a college grad student rather than a top secret undercover agent. He is somehow hip and geeky at the same time. Jonah is an expert at computer technology. SERIES REGULAR

Rob Weiss, any ethnicity, 30s. Weiss is the argumentative and tough Chief of Staff to President Allison Taylor. He speaks his mind and does not worry about being polite. Davis Cole, any ethnicity, Mid 20s - 30s. Davis is a former military guy who is now in charge of the Counter Terrorism Unit's Field Operations. Farhad Hashemi, Middle Eastern, 30s - 40s. Hashemi is the Secretary of State of a fictional Middle Eastern country, and his brother is the President. He does not completely trust the Americans, and he is reluctant to enter into a peace treaty with the United States.

As Cara puts Jihadist propaganda on Jibraan's computer, Tony forces him to read a terrorist statement in front of a camera or he and his brother will be killed. Tony keeps promising him that if he does as he's told, he'll live through this. Two cops come by, called by the neighbors about the noise. With Tony holding him at gunpoint behind the door, Jibraan tells them it was just noisy, drunken friends who he sent away.

Chloe isn't finding any chatter on the CTU servers. Jack has her expand the search by checking on all Muslims in the D.C. Metro area. Janis protests this racial profiling, but Jack says there is no other choice. Jack forgets what he's saying mid-sentence, and Janis realizes that Jack hasn't told her about his illness. She confronts Jack as he injects himself. He confesses that he only has a day or two left to live, but that's not important. He's accepted it, and he wants everyone focused on doing their job.

Dr. Macer gives Jack the injection he needs to stop his spasms, and he tells the FBI to put out an APB on Tony. They do so, but it's a moment too late; Tony shoots a couple of FBI agents dead, disconnects their SUV's tracking system, and steals the car. Jack is remorseful that he vouched for Tony.

At a motel, Tony meets up with Galvez. The money's been wired to Galvez's account, but instead of giving Tony the canister, Galvez pulls a gun on Tony and demands the name of the buyer. He doesn't know who he's messing with. Tony gets the drop on Galvez and kills him. He then finds the canister in the closet. Cara arrives and wants to make the delivery, but Tony says no. They will sit on the canister for six months. Cara says it's necessary in order to replace the 27 lost canisters, but Tony knows the time to strike is now while the country is reeling. Also the FBI is stretched thin and making mistakes.

Jonas Hodges' favorite attorney, Patricia Eames, gets a phone call at her home. Hodges wants her to represent him. As she opens her front door to leave, she's ambushed by a man hidden behind a mask who gasses her and then gives her a lethal injection. Just before she dies, she sees a woman who seems to be her exact double. The double, Cara Bowden, steals Patricia's glasses. The man uses a device to scan Patricia's thumbprint and transplant it to Cara's hand in the form of a thin plastic coating.

At the FBI, Galvez is ID'd from a Starkwood security camera. A four-block area is locked down. Within that perimeter, Tony shoots himself in the side and then tells Galvez via phone to stay put because the canister Galvez stole is worth a lot of money to the people Tony's working for. The FBI arrives to find Tony shot and Larry Moss dead. He claims they were ambushed.

Later, Tony calls Galvez to warn him about the FBI's movements. Tony advises him to find a large store or warehouse in the area that he can lure the FBI into and then blow it up. Back at the FBI, Kim Bauer says goodbye to Renee. Her father won't agree to the treatment, and she knows there's no point in trying to change his mind. Kim is just happy they got to say some of the things they have always wanted to express. Just then, Renee gets the call informing her that Larry Moss is dead. She is now the ranking agent in charge. Renee is stunned, but pulls herself together and begins issuing orders. She shows no trace of emotion, and cuts Janis off when she tries to offer condolences.

Ausiello: Not only is she coming back next season, but exec producer Howard Gordon tells me that "some part of her past will be necessary in the context of the next crisis." Gordon also confirms that Cherry Jones' President Taylor will return for the Big Apple-set Day 8. "Cherry truly defined this character and fashioned our first truly aspirational President since David Palmer," he says. "She brought an emotional weight and intelligence that exceeded even our expectations."

Here's a little more "intel" on Anil Kapoor from "Slumdog Millionaire" & his role in Day 8 of 24, along with two other characters.

[FARHAD HASHEMI] Middle Eastern. Mid 30s to early 40s. He is the brother to the President of a yet unnamed Middle Eastern country (played by ANIL KAPOOR “Slumdog Millionaire”). Farhad serves as his brother’s Secretary of State, and is hesitant about a treaty they are making with the US...RECURRING ROLE.

[SONDRA HASHEMI] Middle Eastern, in her 40s, she is Arman’s (Anil kapoor) wife. An attractive woman. It initially seems she does not have the warmest relationship with her husband...RECURRING ROLE.

[KAYLA HASHEMI] Middle Eastern, she is the early to mid 20s daughter of Arman and Sondra. Kayla seems to live more in the shadow of her mother and is very protective of her father...RECURRING ROLE.

Day 8 in New York City

When all the fuss surrounding Washington, D.C. wraps up in six hours—err, in roughly six episodes on 24—expect everything to move slightly westward, and to the city that never sleeps. Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello reports that the upcoming eighth season of the Emmy-winning action series will be set in New York, or at least, on screen.

The show will still be mostly shot in Los Angeles, although Kiefer Sutherland, probably among others, will be shooting some scenes in New York. It may be too early to speculate what exactly will happen, but the move in location may explain some major storylines next season—and the spoilers begin right below, so click with care!

ETA: Day 8 production begins in next month!

Now that we’re here, it’s been said that the CTU—the organization jettisoned between Day 6 and Day 7—will be staging a return. Leading it is a new character named Brian Hastings, described as “an MBA type with razor-sharp intellect”; he is promptly assisted by two new agents—a male and a female, both in their 20s—and a returning Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub). The character’s yet to be cast, though.

Casting is also underway for the brother and wife of Arman Hashemi, a leader from the Middle East who heads to the United States for the peacekeeping mission (click on the link to see the previously posted info on this character). It’s been previously reported that Slumdog Millionaire star Anil Kapoor will take on that role.

As for the other implications, well, who knows? It’s a colder, more compressed and more urban environment, and without any idea on what the possible emergency could be, everything is still up in the air. Well, Jack Bauer will still be there, obviously, and for once, you can say that the next 24 sleepless, adrenaline-filled hours of his life that we’ll see will fit with the city that never sleeps. I couldn’t resist that pun.

Jack calls Tony with news that the President called off the air strikes. Tony spots something that tells him why -- a fuel truck pumping RP-7, which is used for surface-to-surface missiles. Hodges must be threatening to launch. Tony's got three charges of C-4 and a remote detonator. Jack tells him to get into the depot and blow those tanks.

Jack calls President Taylor to ask permission. She has been fending off the Joint Chiefs and trying to keep the situation a secret, so she refuses to authorize the plan. Yet the President tells Jack she expects he will do what he thinks is right. Jack takes that as a request to undertake a covert action that she can deny authorizing if those missiles are launched.

Hodges, with Seaton in tow, arrives at the White House for his meeting with the President. Larry gives his stamp of approval to Jack's plan. He will move in as soon as Tony takes out the missiles. Stokes is in charge of the fueling truck, and Tony forces him at gunpoint to lead him to the fuel tanks, where Tony begins setting up the C-4.

Tony, how could you????

Y'all know I love Tony - OMG I love Tony but I was so hurt at what happened last night! I've had suspicions all along... my thoughts:

1. The look on Tony's face as Jack, the Matobo's & Bill leave to meet the President at the White House - there was just something about the way he looked, like he was having a problem with a decision he made or something he would do. This is my Tony; he won't betray Jack & he's been helping Bill.

2. His "timely" appearance as Jack sat outside staring out at the Washington Monument - he just seemed to appear out of nowhere to "help". And this source who said it wasn't over just didn't sit well with me. Again, he's my Tony & I didn't want to believe something was up.

3. Lastly, I wondered why that guy wanted to do another perimeter check last night as they finished filling the fuel trucks. It just seemed "timely" again especially when the other guy mentioned that he had just checked. Wanting to be careful seemed a little odd especially when he didn't come back between the time Tony came, took the guy underground & came back! I wasn't wanting to believe it could be true. Tony also looked a little suspicious in the chopper w/Larry. I don't know what it was but it just didn't feel right! And what's even funnier is I always watch w/Jason (wanna know about Jason, you gotta read my other blog ha!) and I swear he just said "It's about time for old boy - Larry Moss - to die." And the next dang thing you know, he's smothering in his own blood at the hands of Tony Almeida, after being shot by Tony's cohart!

I'm so hurt by last night's actions that I don't know what to do. I guess that's what I get for falling for the bad ones! I still love him until this is all over!

As Tony and Larry realize that this was a trap, Hodges confronts the FBI team and orders them off his property. There are no weapons of mass destruction here. He gives them five minutes to leave and demands Seaton's release.

Back at the FBI, Renee and Jack confer. Jack finds another contact inside Starkwood named Douglas Knowles who was cooperating with Senator Mayer's investigation. Jack calls Knowles, who is relieved to hear from the FBI. He thinks that he knows where the canisters are. Jack calls Tony and Larry, urging them to have the FBI withdraw and find a way to leave Tony behind to meet up with Knowles.

Larry creates a diversion by insisting on arresting Seaton and then getting into a fistfight with him. Tony slips away during the scuffle. A Starkwood commando puts a gun to Larry's head, and Larry backs off. He and the rest of the SWAT team leave. Tony finds Knowles, who says that the weapons are likely in a secure area. He has no idea how they'll get there without being caught.

The other day I posted the 1am-2am press release which states Kim Bauer will make her Day 7 debut! Well, here's a little info about her return:

Q: When will Kim Bauer be coming back to 24? And will it have anything to do with the bio-weapon Jack has been exposed to?
MATT: When I asked Kiefer Sutherland about the nature of Kim's latest encore (slated for mid-April), he said, "Something has happened to Jack, and it's he who asks for her — normally it's the other away around." Kiefer went on to call the father-daughter reunion "very human and real ... a part of the show I'm excited for the audience to see." So your theory sounds about right. Just don't expect the now-married Kim to have Pony Boy at her side; her Season 5 romance apparently didn't take.

The CDC arrives to test Jack and find out what he may have been contaminated with. He is not yet showing any symptoms. Jack tells them what little he can about the bioweapon. It will take 15 minutes to find out whether he's infected. In the meantime, he asks to be taken to the FBI.

The deadly canisters arrive at Starkwood -- as does the captured Tony Almeida. Hodges demands that the bioweapon be ready to deploy ASAP because two hours is too long. Tony is roughed up, and Hodges promises that he will get out of this alive if he talks. Tony keeps mum. Greg Seaton interrupts; he thinks the plan should be called off now that the government knows because it was supposed to be covert. Hodges angrily tells him to keep his doubts to himself.

At the White House, Olivia recommends a man named Rick Berman from the private sector to replace Ethan Kanin as Chief of Staff. President Taylor says that she wants Olivia to be the provisional Chief of Staff during the search. Olivia is reluctant, but accepts. Larry Moss calls the President to tell her that Jack is innocent, and that Starkwood was involved with today's terrorist attacks. They are preparing to strike right now, so Larry asks for permission to move on Starkwood immediately. The President calls for the Joint Chiefs to be assembled.

For 24 fans who hope to once again see Jack Bauer and the American way prevail over unheard-of evil this season, there is some bad news ... and some badder news.

The simply bad news first.

Speaking with TVGuide.com at Saturday night's GLAAD Media Awards, Cherry Jones (who plays President Allison Taylor) teased that with this week's "game-changing" episode, "We have Mr. [Jon] Voight fully in the Darth Vader chair," wreaking havoc as Jonas Hodges.

"He's moving into high gear," warns Jones, "which means the rest of us have to move into high gear. Again!"

Luckily, the U.S. of A. has a sharp-thinking POTUS to watch its back, right? Actually, it sounds like Madame President's trying day is about to get the best of her — which is understandable, given that she has witnessed the explosion of a passenger jet outside her Oval Office window as well as been held hostage during a terrorist invasion of the White House.

Says Jones, "To the fans of Allison Taylor, I apologize for a few sleep-deprived decisions I might be making in the next episode."

What sort of questionable call does 24's commander in chief make during the middle of the night? Sources tell TVGuide.com that her primary trespass involves conniving daughter Olivia, and is sure to have viewers abuzz Tuesday morning.

HONG KONG – Kiefer Sutherland will be back to play Jack Bauer for an eighth season of the hit counterterrorism drama "24," but the show's longevity will depend on its writers, the actor said Tuesday.

The 42-year-old said "24," currently in its seventh season, will start shooting its eighth in May. He spoke during an interview in Hong Kong to promote the new 3-D animated movie "Monsters vs. Aliens," in which he voices the character of General W.R. Monger.

Sutherland, whose gritty portrayal of the counter-terrorism agent has made Bauer an iconic character, said he's committed to the show that's revived his career.

"If I was going to liken '24' to a girlfriend, '24' has been really good to me. And I need to be really good back," Sutherland said.

"There are plays I want to do. There are so many different things I would like to do, but I was so fortunate to be part of something like '24' that my focus is still on that right now," he said.

Sutherland said the show's future also hinges on its writers' ability to shape its story.

"The real pressure is placed on the writers. It's a real question about how much they feel they can give and what they can do," he said.

Sutherland, whose movie credits include "Young Guns" and "A Few Good Men," said he hasn't thought much about his career after "24" and isn't worried about being typecast as a Bauer-like government agent.

"I will do the work I want to do and people can accept it or not," he said.

Working as a voice actor on "Monsters vs. Aliens" was a "fantastic counterbalance" to playing Bauer, he said.

"The relief was unbelievable. For five days a week, 14 hours a day, I'm doing Jack Bauer on '24' and then for five hours on the weekend, I got to kind of proverbially let my hair down and play this character and talk like that and be a kid. I felt like a 5-year-old," said Sutherland, simulating the deep, raspy voice of his character.

"Monsters vs. Aliens," which is about a jailed group of monsters who are freed to help battle an alien robot, opens in U.S. theaters Friday.

As the FBI continue their search for Jack, Larry calls Ethan and tells him that Senator Mayer is dead. They believe that Jack murdered him. Ethan is angry with Larry for letting Jack get away, but Larry reminds him that he advised Ethan against using Jack in the first place. This sobers Ethan, who subsequently tenders his resignation to the President.

With her husband on the mend, the President was hoping the day would end on a more positive note. She tries to persuade Ethan not to resign, but he feels that his poor decisions will tarnish her administration if he does not resign immediately.

Jack calls Tony and explains about the bioweapon that Starkwood is about to get a hold of in order to fight their congressional order to be dismantled. U.S. civilians will be killed to prove that Starkwood is needed as a secondary security force. Jack believes the weapon is still at the port. There's only one Port Authority Officer on duty, named Carl Gadsen. As Gadsen gets off the phone with his very pregnant wife while working double shifts to make ends meet, Jack and Tony grab him. They disarm him and force him at gunpoint to get the port manifest.

Michael Rodrick: The Interview

Given everything that has happened on 24 this season, it's hard to believe the action's just getting started. Now that megalomaniac Jonas Hodges (played by Jon Voight) is back in the picture, it's time to "make some holy hell for Jack Bauer," series newcomer Michael Rodrick tells TVGuide.com. The actor, who plays Hodges' cohort, Stokes, gave us a preview of the bloody mess to come.

TVGuide.com: I've been trying to read up on Stokes and there's nothing besides "deadly military operative." So who is he and how do we meet him?
Michael Rodrick: [Laughs] Well, you know how it is. Basically Jon Voight is just going to start to unleash a lot of bedlam and I'm one of the henchmen there to get things rolling. It's going to be a lot of psychological warfare. Then it's gonna escalate and be a lot of physical warfare — aka torture — to get what we want.

TVGuide.com: What can we expect on this week's episode?
Rodrick: We'll be bringing a bio-weapon onto U.S. soil, as part of a plan. We have orders that we want to execute and of course [Jack] gets in the way. In the last episode, he was on his way to the containing yard. We're going to be there — and we're gonna make sure he doesn't win.

TVGuide.com: We just got re-introduced to Hodges. What's his overall motivation?
Rodrick: Yeah, what is his overall motivation? [Laughs] In terms of the overall arc, I'm not privy to that. But I think these private mercenaries for the most part are motivated by the fact that their country has let them down in some way. I think that's what [Hodges] is all about and what I am all about. We're a private army and we feel like how Tony Almeida feels, except Tony's still doing the right thing and we're not.

TVGuide.com: Are you loyal to Hodges?
Rodrick: Oh, I always have my own agenda. That's all I'm gonna say. You'll get to know Stokes very well. Be prepared for me to psychologically tear a lot of people apart and kidnap them. Watch me kick Bauer's ass! [Laughs]

TVGuide.com: Do you get your ass kicked?
Rodrick: Uh... I'm pretty tough. I withstand a lot of pain. I'm like the Harrison Ford who keeps getting kicked around but keeps coming back.

TVGuide.com: The talk is that Hodges will prove to be one of 24's best villains ever. Do you agree?
Rodrick: Defintely. I think that this corporate entity he represents will frighten people to the bone. To make that jump of disbelief is quite easy when you think of a private army gone mad. It's gonna be fascinating. The viewers will be entranced by it and him.

TVGuide.com: Were you intimidated to work with Jon Voight?
Rodrick: We went to the same college, so I knew I had an icebreaker. But we were in a production van and I'm telling this techie who's got twin boys about raising twins, because I'm a twin. As I'm saying this, Jon Voight's like, "Hold on! Hold on!" It never even occurred to me that Angelina Jolie just had twins, so of course he wants to know this stuff! I think he absorbed everything that I said. He's very proud to be a grandpa. ... He's a real guy's guy. He smashed an ankle [in one scene] — didn't say anything, gets an ice pack and ices it himself. What a tough guy. You look at him walk and the way he talks — it's that whole generation. Him and Clint Eastwood, they've got this gait. They're all cowboys.

TVGuide.com: What was it like working with Kiefer Sutherland?
Rodrick: Kiefer is so intense, an incredible bundle of energy. He's landing helicopters, running around and shooting people. ... And in between takes, he's playing chess! He sets up this chessboard and everyone's got to be really quiet. If you're a Kiefer fan, grab a chessboard and get him to sign it.

TVGuide.com: Is there a chance we will see Stokes beyond this arc?
Rodrick: [Laughs] I cannot say, but you'll definitely be surprised what happens to him.

MATT: Oh, you know I love me some Sprague. The good news: We are far from seeing the last of feisty first daughter Olivia Taylor. The gooder news: Her nastiest is yet to come, as she even more brashly butts heads with Chief of Staff Ethan. But as is one of 24's calling cards, viewers may soon start questioning which of the two is in the right.

*My Thoughts* I've wondered about Ethan since the beginning of this season. I want to believe he's he's truly on the Prez T's side in all of this, but I've seen way too many times where who I thought was the good guy was actually the head bad guy! So while I'm not ruling it out just yet, I hope that Ethan's sincere & not complicit in the day's events.

Jack steals a car from the hospital parking garage to make his escape. Meanwhile, Morris O'Brian has arrived at the FBI demanding to know where his wife is and he finds that Chloe has been arrested. Larry calls Janis to inform her Ryan Burnett is dead and Jack is the suspect. He has her put out an APB. Renee, in the process of filling out her suspension paperwork, overhears this and asks Janis what's going on. All Janis knows is that Burnett is dead and Jack has gone missing.

Renee goes to her office -- and Jack calls, declaring his innocence. He took a surveillance DVD from the hospital and is viewing it on a laptop in the car. He emails her a frame-grab of Quinn and says that this is who killed Burnett. He is the only connection they've got to whoever else is still involved.

Quinn calls Hodges and tells him that Jack got away. Hodges isn't concerned; his shipment from Juma will arrive within the hour. Once they deploy the weapons, it won't matter what Jack finds out. Hodges' number two, Greg Seaton, looks discomfited. Hodges insists that he gets no pleasure out of killing people. Even one death is tragic -- but they are fighting a war, and what they're doing is absolutely, fundamentally necessary. He tells Seaton to wake up their colleagues and tell them to assemble in one hour.

Renee calls Jack back. She has identified Quinn as a former Black Ops combat vet who now works for Starkwood, which turns out to be a private paramilitary organization. Senator Mayer may know more because he had been investigating Starkwood. Jack will need to talk to him. As Renee looks up Mayer's current location, Larry enters. The conversation they have about Jack convinces Larry that she's been talking to him. He secretly has Janis access Renee's phone log and workstation. Renee is their best chance of catching Jack.

Here's a little scoop from Annie Wersching about her role as FBI Agent/Jack Bauer counterpart Renee Walker:

“In the script after episode 10, when I slap Jack, there was a kiss written into that episode but they took it out of the script last minute... We thought it was a little cliché for that moment in particular,” Annie explains. "And besides, I don’t know [if] I want a romantic storyline with Jack. Isn’t that usually the kiss of death for a character involved with him? It doesn’t usually fair well to be in a relationship with Jack Bauer.”

And how do the two get on off screen? “We get along great. Kiefer plays a lot of chess. He tried to teach me, but it didn’t go well.”

As for what the future holds for her character, Annie says, “I’m going to get into big trouble in an upcoming episode. But I did get picked up for the next season, which starts soon. So that means I don’t die.”

Do you want to see Jack and Annie up in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g? Or is it far too soon given that they've only known each other half a day now? Personally, I'd prefer them not get together at all. Not only would it have been cliche' for that moment, but it might be too cliche' for Jack at all! I mean, does he have to have a relationship? Teri's gone & he's already had to play hero to Audrey... PopWrap: I know you were a big fan of the show going in, how does that change the experience for you as an actor?
Annie Wersching: It's very strange. I worked so much with Kiefer [Sutherland] that I got used to sharing scenes with Jack Bauer. It was more surreal when all of a sudden I would have a scene with Tony or Chloe, where it was like, "Wait, why is Chloe talking to me?" It just freaked me out. Unfortunately as a fan, "24" is pretty much ruined for me -- now it seems like a totally fake show.

PW: I've loved how Renee has evolved -- how much of her arc did you know at the outset?
Annie: None. Nothing [laughs]. It's a very interesting show in that way. They very much write as they go. They want to see how scenes play out and how the chemistry is between certain characters and then write based on that.

PW: In that case, did you spend much time planning out Renee's pre-Jack Bauer life?
Annie: You know, I was cast pretty last minute for the role -- they were having a hard time locking Renee down. They couldn't decide how old to make her, how tough to make her, all these things -- so I was only cast a week before we started shooting and didn't have that much time to develop a back story. But I'm also not the kind of actor who, you know, writes in journals as the character -- I just play her at that minute.

Tim Guinee is set for a recurring role on Fox's "24". On "24," Guinee ("Iron Man") will play Ken Dellao, a news reporter with ties to First Daughter Olivia Taylor (Sprague Grayden). The actor, repped by Innovative and Larry Taube/Sue Leibman, also recently appeared in "Synecdoche, New York."

Last week on 24: Jack interrogates Ryan Burnett about who is plotting the next attack, the Secret Service team moves in to stop Jack's interrogation. FBI Agent Renee Walker informs Larry Moss that Juma's men are attacking the White House, plotting to kill President Allison Taylor. Moss' FBI team sets up a perimeter around the White House, ready to attack Juma and his men. Bill Buchanan informs the White House staff that they are under attack, the enter White House is under lockdown. A gunfight erupts between the Secret Service and Juma's men. Juma's men get the upper hand and capture everyone except for Jack, President Taylor and her daughter, Olivia. In a telephone call, Jonas Hodges tells General Juma that Olivia (aided by retired special agent Aaron Pierce) is somewhere in hiding within the White House. Olivia is captured by one of Juma's men. Jack manages to take President Taylor to the lockdown room; however, they are forced to surrender when Juma captures President Taylor's daughter, Olivia, threatening to kill her.

President Taylor and Olivia emotionally reconcile their differences. The moment is interrupted as one of Juma's men pulls the President away. Jack and Buchanan form a plan. Jack opened canisters of CH-4 in the lockdown room just before surrendering. The room will soon be saturated with natural gas. A single spark from a single bullet will ignite it and take out enough of Juma's men so they can rescue the President. Jack plans to rush Juma's men shortly to try to get off the shot.

The President demands that Juma release the hostages before she reads his statement. Instead, Juma shoots one of the hostages and threatens to kill the rest if she does not comply. She reads his statement on a live feed. The Vice President, watching from a secure location, orders that the feed be shut down, but it can't be. Larry calls, convinced that Juma is on a suicide mission, and again begs the VP to order that the FBI initiate a rescue. Yet the VP refuses, still convinced that Juma can be negotiated with.

Bill Buchanan: Silent Clock 8:11pm

Before I begin, I want to say that I was pondering over who would be the one that we know & love that would die. If not Aaron Pierce, then who? Tony was the first to come to mind because I knew it wouldn't be Chloe. My thoughts never turned to Bill until that last conversation he had with Jack. Let's have a moment of silence for fallen hero, Bill Buchanan, who gave his life to save the President & all those in the White House last night...

Bill Buchanan was a great man. He & Jack didn't always see eye to eye but he knew, as we all know, that there is no greater American hero than Jack Bauer. As he stated to Jack at about 8:08pm last night, Jack is the only one who can do this! Bill will be greatly missed & our thoughts & prayers are with his wife, Karen.

Bill Buchanan was a fictional character in 24. Played by James Morrison, the character is the head of the Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) from the fourth season to the sixth season, when he is forced to step down. In between Season 5 and 6, he married Karen Hayes.[1] He returns in Season 7, working outside of official agencies to uncover a terrorist plot that goes to the highest levels of government.

According to a New York Times review by Walter Dawkins, Bill Buchanan functions as a stoic center figure for the show's Counter Terrorist Unit. Executive producer Howard Gordon describes the balance Buchanan provides: "We feel like we don't want to take his hand off the steering wheel because it's so steady. It is this character nature that suggests he was based upon an Edinburgh Napier University Security Professor that goes by the same name. This is enforced by the fact that Prof. Bill Buchanan is a security expert and consultant to many major companies around the world. He's sort of the grown-up in the room, the straight man for other people who certainly make it a more colorful place to watch."

The occasions when Buchanan's temper does flare carry dramatic weight because of their rarity. Dawkins notes a brief outburst when a terrorist escapes during season six, episode four for being "as explosive as anything else that hour". Actor James Morrison describes the importance of such scenes. "If you pick those moments where he does have that quick explosion, then everyone will take notice."

Buchanan has a Bachelor of Arts in English from Brown University. Prior to becoming the Special Agent in Charge at the LA CTU office, he was the Associate Special Agent in Charge at the Los Angeles Division office. Buchanan started his career as an agent with the New York Domestic Unit.

Season 4: Bill Buchanan is sent to CTU help oversee operations during Day 4, particularly the Jack Bauer-Behrooz Araz trade off, an idea that Buchanan had initially disagreed with. When he realizes that there are no viable alternatives, Buchanan decides to proceed with the exchange.

Following the destruction of the trackers on Behrooz, Jack informs Buchanan that he was able to short circuit some wires where he had been detained. Jack leads a strike team to the location, storming it, only to have the location destroyed by Marwan.

When Jack Bauer brings in Joe Prado, Buchanan looks to the Department of Justice for permission to torture Prado, however is unable to do so. Buchanan calls President Charles Logan for authorization, however the President refuses. Seeing no alternative, Bauer resigns and interrogates Prado as a private citizen, and acquires the information. Audrey Raines and Mike Novick are angry with Buchanan for allowing it, who suggests to Mike to have President Logan sign off on Prado's torture and then just fabricate the timeline. Mike is unable to do so, but Bill later finds out that President Logan wants Bauer detained.

Buchanan becomes visibly angry when he discovers that a raid had occurred on the Chinese consulate without his knowledge. When Cheng Zhi comes to CTU for answers, Buchanan aids in the cover up until Howard Bern can escape from CTU.

Buchanan is informed by Michelle Dessler that a terrorist named Mandy had been calling her He advises her to act as if she is going to proceed with the plan, in order to capture Mandy, however Mandy stages her own death, supposedly killing Tony Almeida as well, which leaves Michelle devastated. Buchanan suggests that she go home. Later Jack calls Bill informing him that Tony is alive.

When Buchanan discovers that Bauer is being transferred into Chinese custody, he tells the Secret Service agent that Bauer is a hero. Bauer attempts to escape, and following a firefight, is supposedly shot and killed. Buchanan informs Audrey Raines what happened, and she breaks down.

At the end of the day, Michelle and Tony retire and Buchanan becomes the Director of CTU.

Season 5: At the start of the day, CTU are working to find a connection between the death of David Palmer and Michelle Dessler. Buchanan briefs President Logan on the Palmer investigation, suggesting that postpone the treaty signing but hr refuses. Edgar shows footage revealing Jack Bauer as the apparent assassin of Palmer. Buchanan issues a warrant for Jack's arrest.

He later finds out that there is a hostage situation at the Ontario airport. Lynn McGill was sent to CTU to oversee the situation, who is criticized throughout the day for a strict adherence to protocol.

When a suspected mole, Spenser Wolff, is discovered, Buchanan interrogates him, and learns he's working for Walt Cummings as part of an internal investigation.

When Jacob Rossler, a programmer aiding terrorists, is captured, Buchanan and McGill agree to grant him immunity in exchange for information on the terrorist's location, however is later killed before he can do so.

Later, when Jack Bauer escapes custody, McGill becomes suspicious that he may have had help from CTU. Buchanan decided to help Audrey aid Jack, and as a result he was detained for insubordination, but was later reinstated when McGill was relieved of duty.

Later in the day, Homeland Security was ordered to absorb CTU, which Buchanan intended to challenge. However, Audrey Raines signed a document discrediting Buchanan, so Chloe O'Brien could stay at CTU. As a result, Buchanan was relieved.

After escaping CTU arrest, O'Brian aids Jack from Bill Buchanan's home, however she is discovered by CTU. Bill receives a tipoff from Karen Hayes, enabling Chloe to escape, and Buchanan is arrested without incident, knowing that he would have protection from Hayes upon arrival at CTU.

At CTU, Buchanan and Hayes discuss Jack's current situation. Working together with Chloe, they aid Jack in obtaining the evidence implicating President Logan. They succeed, however the evidence is later destroyed.

When Vladimir Bierko escapes custody, taking control of a submarine with the intent to use its missiles, Bill and Karen have fighter planes sent to destroy it, and send Jack with a team to resolve the situation. The terrorists are later killed, and the missiles disarmed.

Bill and Karen are kept out of the loop when Jack, Chloe, Mike, Martha and Aaron plot to expose President Logan, but they are notified when Chloe informs them she has evidence incriminating Logan. At the end of the day, after Logan is arrested, Bill and Karen show an interest in to starting a relationship.

Between Day 5 and Day 6, Bill married Karen Hayes.

Season 6: He, along with Curtis Manning, is at Ellis Airfield as a Hercules C-130 military transport lands in the beginning of Day 6. Buchanan then finalizes the trade with the Chinese for the release for Jack Bauer. Buchanan and Curtis are both shocked at Jack's condition and the fact that he has not spoken a word in two years. Later, he explains that the reason that he is being brought back is a deal that President Wayne Palmer struck with a man named Abu Fayed and that he is to be exchanged for Hamri Al-Assad. When Jack knows what is expected of him, he and Curtis allow Jack to clean himself up. Bill proceeds to bring Jack to the drop-off point and is instructed to handcuff Bauer to a nearby guardrail. Although Bill relents, he is unable to do anything, and apologizes to Jack.

Bill arrives at CTU to find out that Morris O'Brian and Chloe O'Brian redirected a personal satellite to view Jack, breaking their promise with Fayed. Bill gets very angry with the two, but does not fire them because he needed the manpower.

Later on Chloe informs Bill that she has satellite footage of Jack helping Hamri Al-Assad escape before the missiles hit. Bill orders her to track any chatter on Fayed, and she later uncovers that Fayed is really the terrorist culprit. Bill wants this finding to be kept between the two of them and Chloe agrees.

After Jack is forced to kill Curtis Manning, Bill tries to bolster his spirits by telling him he did great work that day and that Manning had not left Jack any choice.

When disgraced former president Charles Logan is brought into CTU, Logan convinces Buchanan that his wife might be able to help sway Anya Suvarov to help them resolve the situation by the Russian Consulate. Buchanan agrees and provides Logan with a chopper to Martha Logan's residence. Later, when Jack is captured by the Russian Consulate, with Markov refusing to give up information, Buchanan orders an attack on the consulate whether sanctioned by Vice President Noah Daniels or not. He ends up getting permission from both the vice president and Russian President Yuri Suvarov and leads a successful attack along with Mike Doyle.

When found out that there is a mole in CTU, Doyle immediately convicts Nadia Yassir, creating tension between Milo and Doyle. Bill breaks up the fight in the situation room and tells Doyle that he is way out of line. He gives the order that Nadia's system be searched first. Later on Jack finds out that Bill knew that Audrey Raines had died in China and was keeping the information from Jack. Bill said that he did not tell Jack because Jack was about to sacrifice himself for the country. When Nadia Yassir is cleared of being a mole, Bill asks her to come back even though he says that he would quit if he were in her shoes. Nadia agrees to come back. Later when Bill gets a call from his wife Karen Hayes and she says that she is afraid that she is the reason that Vice President Daniels will continue acting as president. Bill comforts her by saying that Daniels does not have a case and that the supreme courts will agree and to let him know when they made a decision. Karen thanks her husband for being there. Bill says, "You don’t have to thank me. It’s my job."

After the capture of lead terrorist Abu Fayed, CTU stages a fake rescue of Fayed hoping that he would lead them to the two remaining suitcase nukes. It is revealed by the ambassador that his country has captured a general who might have been helping Fayed. Buchanan gets President Palmer to order the ambassador to have the captured general contact Fayed. Nadia Yassir warns Buchanan that there might be some sort of distress signal encoded in the phone call.

Buchanan briefs the CTU staff on the death of Abu Fayed and the end of the terrorist threat and thanks all the personnel for their hard work. During the briefing Chloe gets a call from Jack. Chloe later admits to him that the reason Jack was calling her was that he wants to trade the Russian bomb's circuit board to the Chinese in exchange for Audrey Raines. After being informed, Buchanan orders Mike Doyle to secure Jack. However, Buchanan allows Jack to contact President Wayne Palmer. Wayne gives CTU the go ahead to make the exchange after Jack assures that he will not allow the board to get into Chinese hands. Karen later informs Buchanan that Vice President Daniels is now the acting president and wants Jack Bauer and the whole operation stopped. Buchanan calls Doyle, who is riding alongside Jack, and tells him that he must disarm Jack and bring him in. Jack forces Doyle out of the car after the phone conversation and goes ahead with the mission. This allows for the rescue of Audrey Raines without Buchanan directly disobeying superior orders.

Mike Doyle informs Buchanan that Jack has escaped is attempting to get the circuit board to Cheng. Buchanan announces to the CTU staff that Jack Bauer has gone rogue.

Later Morris O'Brian enters Buchanan's office and requests a transfer. Buchanan asks if it has something to do with him and Chloe. Morris says yes. Though reluctant, Buchanan agrees to see what he can do. After Morris leaves, he calls Karen back and she informs him that she is being forced to fire him from CTU to protect herself and the President, as the Department of Justice wanted a fall guy for Fayed being allowed to slip through CTU/Homeland Security earlier, before he was a known threat. Buchanan is angry about this because he did not do anything wrong and did everything by the book. He hangs up on her, and contacts division. On his way out, he tells Nadia Yassir that he is stepping down and that she will be temporarily in charge of CTU until division sends a replacement. When asked why by Nadia, he simply says, "It's just politics." Security escorts him out of the building and Nadia announces to CTU that she is now acting Director.

Around 4:00am, Buchanan is at home where he is dealing with an FBI search of his home. When his cell phone rings, he sees that it is Karen and initially does not answer. Karen leaves a voice message on his home answering machine. She tells him that Vice President Daniels is about to go through with an exchange between Josh Bauer and the subcircuitboard. She believes that it is a bad idea and begs Bill to intervene. Soon after, Buchanan crashes his truck with the CTU SUV that was transporting Jack back to CTU causing them to go off the road. When Buchanan is talking to the agents Jack comes behind Agent Turner and causes him to drop his weapon. After handcuffing the two agents to their car, Jack and Bill drive away towards the beach. When riding Buchanan gets a call from Karen, who tells him that Secret Service found out about her and that they will be arresting her any time. She thanked him and told him she loved him.

After summoning medical attention for the injured Mike Doyle, Jack and Buchanan commandeer a CTU helicopter in order to rescue Josh. They fly out to sea together against the orders of White House and CTU. Buchanan asks Nadia for the thermal-Intel of the oil rig so they would know the location of hostiles. After landing, Jack kills all the hostiles and wounds Cheng. Buchanan escorts Cheng back to the chopper and waits for Jack. Josh comes running and tells him that Jack is still with his father. When Buchanan communicates with Jack through comm., Jack tells him to fly along the side of the rig so that Jack can be picked up. Jack jumps on the ladder seconds before the missiles hit the rig.

Buchanan flies Josh and Cheng back to CTU where he congratulates Nadia Yassir on her good work. At the conclusion of the day, Buchanan resigns in exchange for a pardon.

Season 7: Although the actor originally wrote on his official website that he would not be returning to the series for its seventh season, he said in August 2008 that he will be returning to the show after all. Bill is briefly shown in the first official 24 season 7 trailer with white hair, appearing to be working alongside Chloe O'Brian. Neither Bill nor Chloe appear in the first or second episodes of the seventh season, but appear starting in the third episode, working on their own, outside of official agencies, to reveal a conspiracy at the highest levels of the current administration. The seriousness of this threat has led him to be willing to let his men die in order to achieve their objectives.

After Dubaku is apprehended and a large number of US-based conspirators revealed, he asks the President to speak to Senator Mayer about the Senate hearings where Jack Bauer is accused of acts of torture, reminding her of the contribution Jack has made in stopping Dubaku. Later on when General Juma attacks the White House, Bill and Jack realize that Juma is using the President's tracker bracelet to locate her. Bill removes the tracker and uses it to lead Juma's men away from the President, acting as a decoy to buy Jack time to get the President to the lock-down room. He succeeds but is captured by Juma's men and is taken hostage. In Hour 13, 8:00 - 9:00 PM, Bill ignites natural gas that had been allowed to fill the lockdown area with his gun, killing a considerable number of Juma's troops and sacrificing his own life in the process. He is given the silent clock at 8:11 P.M. (

Outside TV series: In the comic book 24: Cold Warriors, it is revealed that Buchanan had a relative, probably a brother, who served with Jack Bauer in Delta Force and was tortured and killed in Afghanistan by a Russian agent named Malenov (who is in turn killed years later by Bauer). In the novel Operation Hell Gate, Buchanan makes a brief appearance on a conference call with Nina Myers.

A: Actually, my 24 tattletale says Aaron Pierce will not kick the bucket tonight. Any other guesses?

Q: The hostage situation on 24 is pretty intense. How long will they drag it out?
A: Don't worry, you won't have to wait much longer to get some resolution. Executive producer Howard Gordon tells me, "We've done a few of them over the years, and they tend to be fairly static affairs. There's only so much mileage you can get out of them. It was something we considered playing longer in, and we only played it as long as we felt we could. It really doesn't amount to a standoff, so it doesn't last more than a couple of episodes."

Olivia Taylor still wants to go see her father in the hospital. Aaron Pierce persuades her to stay put at the White House, as her mother, the President, has ordered this for her own safety. Meanwhile, the President plans to tell the public the truth about a second attack that is looming. Larry calls and tells her that Juma's involved and that he's lost contact with Renee.

Renee climbs out of the Potomac. She finds a park ranger and tells him to call and report an imminent terrorist attack at the White House, but the ranger is cut down by bullets from Laurent's gun. Renee flees, Laurent in pursuit. Meanwhile, in a holding cell, Jack pleads with Bill Buchanan to torture Burnett until he talks. Bill is sorry, but he just can't do that.

With the help of an inside man, Juma and his men break into the White House. They shoot down a detail of Secret Service. With nine minutes until the next Secret Service roll call, they must find the President.

Laurent catches up with Renee, who tells him that his father is dead by Juma's hand. Laurent doesn't believe her. Just as he's about to strangle her to death, he's shot dead by Larry and the FBI men who have finally arrived. Renee says that she knows Juma's target.

I know I promised to write my own recaps from last week forward, but there was too much going on last night to keep up. I didn't want to wait until late in the day to post this, so here you go before 9am! Enjoy!

Disguised as an orderly, Udo, a soldier of Juma's, sneaks into the hospital where Dubaku is recuperating and poisons him with a lethal injection that induces a heart attack. Meanwhile, President Taylor watches Juma on television giving a defiant speech about the American invasion of Sangala. The recording was probably made before the invasion, so where is Juma now?

In a warehouse near the Capitol building, Juma secretly assembles his men. Young Laurent, Dubaku's son, is among them. Udo calls to report on Dubaku's death. Juma tells him that Laurent must never know of his father's cowardice.

At the FBI, Chloe gets a call from Jack, who asks her to delete Ryan Burnett's name from the list of corrupt government officials. She hesitates, but does so just before Janis enters, asking to help with processing the list, and lingering at Chloe's station just a little too long for comfort.

Tony and Jack arrive at the White House. As a still-wanted felon, Tony must wait outside. Meanwhile, Burnett calls Juma asking if the attack can be delayed because he's stuck at the White House. Their call is interrupted as he's welcomed by Ethan Kanin. Kanin asks Senator Mayer to quietly drop his prosecution of Jack Bauer in exchange for the President's support of his war crimes bill. If he doesn't play along, the President may simply pardon Bauer. Mayer is outraged.

Is there love in the air for Jack & Renee?

Could it be that Jack Bauer is clock-blocked no more and will finally find time for a new romance?

24 executive producer Howard Gordon says that the increasingly intense moments between the disgraced CTU agent and his Season 7 sidekick, FBI agent Renee Walker, are leading to some good — if complicated — loving.

"They have established the emotional framework for a relationship that I think we're going to see manifested in the eighth season," Gordon tells TVGuide.com. "It's definitely part of our plan."

In the Fox thriller's latest hour, Renee slapped Jack — twice — before breaking down in his arms, distraught over the indirect role they played in an innocent woman's death. Of course, said tragedy came in the name of stopping the latest terrorist threat on U.S. soil.

Jack being Jack, whatever may come for him and Renee won't come easy. Says Gordon, "It's not a romance in the traditional sense of the word. It's a lot more broken and jagged than what you might imagine."

Since losing his wife to Original CTU Mole Nina at the climax of Season 1, Jack has only hooked up with Audrey Raines (played by Kim Raver) and trailer-park hottie Diane (the woefully underused Connie Britton). And where are they both these days? Gone.

As such, stepping into the role of Jack's next love interest had to be a daunting prospect for Annie Wersching. However, Gordon raves, the 24 newcomer "has really connected with the audience. I think she's done a spectacular job and we're extremely proud of her."

Good news for 24 fans! Executive producer Howard Gordon has just confirmed the eighth season is most definitely coming—and soon!

Says Gordon, "We're gearing up for a May start date. I'm with the writers now just putting our heads together, coming up with an idea. Unless we fail to come up with an idea that's satisfactory, you'll see an eighth season." Holler!

And if that weren't exciting enough, Annie Wersching is confirmed to return next season, which might mean some lovin' for Mr. Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), except that Gordon also teased a shocking death—could it even be Jack Bauer finally kicking the bucket?

Survey says: Not yet!

While the eighth season is secure, that doesn't mean Jack Bauer is. Gordon told us at TCA that a post-season-eight movie is likely, but apparently producers don't have their hearts set on it. Gordon said today, "We may decide ultimately if there's not a movie [story] worth telling, Jack may see his last day on television. He could die in the series...I think that's possible."

Now it's time for some goodies about Monday's major two-hour episode...

White House Drama: As I reported back in November, the White House is going to be attacked. As with any big 24 event, there will be plenty of deaths and a big hostage standoff. "These guys are in scuba gear, breaking through subterranean rock. Obviously it's more like a James Bond film than a documentary on how one would try to breach the White House," says Gordon. Still, pretty amazing...

Jack and Renee Sitting in a Tree: Even though Dubaku (Hakeem Kae-Kazim) is in the hospital, there's another Dubaku—his son—gunning for Renee (Annie Wersching). Renee's life is definitely in danger, but fret not! Gordon assures us that Agent Walker sticks around until next season, saying, "This season they establish the emotional framework for a relationship. We're going to see that manifested in the eighth season. It's definitely part of our plan, but it's not a romance in the traditional sense of the word. It's a lot more broken and jagged than what you might imagine."

Chloe's Baby Bump Ahoy: They have finally found their way to get Chloe offscreen so Mary-Lynn Rajskub could go have her baby. Gordon says, "She's going to be in some big trouble—she'll have to repair her legacy." But Chloe eventually returns, and the FBI desperately needs her later this season. "You'll see there is a distinction with what CTU was once able to do and what FBI is able to do, and that gets brought into relief when Chloe reenters the story at a later point," adds Gordon.

Big Bad Jonas: Finally, we really get to meet Jonas Hodge (Jon Voight) in Monday night's big event. We knew he had close ties to the government after seeing him on the presidential steps before the inauguration, but Gordon says, "You will get a full-bodied explanation of Jon Voight's motivations. He is in the tradition of all our best villains: very complicated, megalomaniacal and, in his view, well intentioned. You'll know in all its operatic glory why he's done what he's done." That doesn't sound too good for Jack!

OK here's a quick recap of last week (4pm-5pm):
Jack advises President Taylor that her hubby was shot. She goes to the hospital to be with him and asks Bill to get someone to bring her daughter, Olivia to her. Bill sends Aaron Pierce to get her. Dubaku tells Burnett that if anything happens to him, he has made arrangements to have the data files containing all his contacts & accounts to be sent to the Justice Department. We find out that Sean, at the FBI, is the mole when Burnett calls him to let him know that Dubaku needs to get out of the country or else they're all going down. Jack & Renee get to Marika's house just before she gets ready to leave to meet Dubaku. They tell her & her sister Rosa exactly who he is & what he's up to. Marika agrees to help them capture him by meeting him like she planned while they track her using her cell phone. The car arrives to get Marika so Jack & Renee head out to follow her when they are sidetracked by a police barricade. They get detained while Marika's on her way to meet Dubaku. Burnett has already given him the heads up that Marika's been contacted by FBI. Burnett wants to have her "taken care of", but Dubaku wants to do it himself.

5:00 pm-5:12 pm
We come back to Sean listening in on Chloe & Larry when Erika comes over to his station questioning him about why he issued a warrant for the vehicle Jack & Renee were in. He explains that they were catching up to Dubaku & he did it to stall them. No surprise from her because she's been in this all along! I frickin' knew she was a part of this! Ha! She does start freaking out, though, because she's afraid of getting caught. Sean assures her that he has it under control.

Jack & Renee try to reason with the police to let them go. They realize that someone working for Dubaku issued the warrant which means Dubaku will find out about Marika & possibly kill her. Renee is upset that Jack seems to come to terms with everything he does. She gave Rosa her word that she'd make sure Marika was alright so she wants to get back on the chase ASAP.
